Rioja is such an interesting wine region. Instead of classifying wines by vineyard location or producer, red wines are often classified by the amount of oak aging for each bottling. From Joven, which sees no oak, and Crianza, with the least required oak aging, to Reserva and Gran Reserva with extended aging requirements, in Rioja it is all about time spent in oak and bottle before release.
Another unique characteristic is the use of American oak barrels and vats, unlike most of Europe which relies heavily on French, Slavonian, or Hungarian oak. And while France typically releases wines shortly after bottling, many producers in Rioja hold their wines back until they believe they are truly ready to drink.
Come discover how all of these choices shape the flavor, structure, and ageability of Tempranillo-based red blends from the mountainous region of Rioja in this one hour class with Whitney.
